When philosopher John Locke was a student at Oxford, from 1652 to 1658, he developed a method of note taking, which successive generations learned upon arrival at Oxford at least through the eighteenth century.  Locke published book on commonplacing, A New Method of Making Common-Place-Books, in 1706.
