Who we are

Oxford Dawn is a newsletter by and for people who are interested in art, culture, history, literature, and correcting historical inaccuracies in film and television.

The name Oxford Dawn is a tribute to my grandparents, whose love of the town and university led me to study there. There is also a pun in the name. Oxford University faculty used to be known by the term ‘don’, a homophone with ‘dawn’. The term ‘don’ came from the Latin Dominus or Domina, meaning lord or lady. As language changed across the centuries, dominus/domina was abbreviated to ‘dom’ in the Romance language countries and ‘don’ in English, and the term came to signify an educated person.
